Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California won the 2022 BMW Championship on Sunday. Cantlay shot a four-round score of -14. Prior to the tournament, Cantlay was one of our three players we liked to take the title (joining Will Zalatoris, who withdrew because of a back injury, and Jon Rahm).
Cantlay had back-to-back rounds of three-under-par 68 in rounds one and two on Thursday and Friday, and then shot a score of six-under-par 65 in round three on Saturday, and then a score of two-under par 69 in round four on Sunday. Scott Stallings of Worcester, Massachusetts was one stroke back at -13, while reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey were each three strokes back at -11.Â
This was Cantlay’s second PGA Tour victory in 2022. He previously won the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Schauffele.
Cantlay has had outstanding success in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He was the 2021 FedEx Cup champion, and 2021 BMW Championship winner.
Cantlay is currently ranked third in the world. He is only behind Scottie Scheffler of the United States and Cameron Smith of Australia.
The 2022 FedEx Cup Tour Championship take place in Atlanta, Georgia starting Thursday. Thirty golfers qualify for the tournament with Scheffler leading at -10. Cantlay is second at -8, and Zalatoris is third at -7. However, it will be interesting to see if Zalatoris will be competing in Atlanta after he withdrew in Delaware this past weekend at the BMW Championship. Smith, who won the British Open, is the only Australian golfer to have qualified for the Tour Championship.
