In a new segment for the Sporting Base, we will preview the weekend ahead on the PGA Tour by focusing on three golfers that have an excellent chance of reaching the winner’s circle. There is no better way to start the feature than with the third major of the year–the 2022 United States Open at Brookline.
When selecting the golfers that had the best chance to win this week, I looked at one primary factor. They did not compete at the 2022 Canadian Open last week in Toronto or the controversial LIV event in London. In my opinion those golfers who took last weekend off will be better suited mentally for the challenges ahead at this gruelling test the United States Open provides the players on an annual basis. Here are three players who will be in contention and have a chance of winning come Sunday.
Jon Rahm
The Spaniard, who is ranked second in the world, plays very well in national championships. He not only won the 2021 U.S. Open, and enters Brookline as the defending champion, but won the 2022 Mexico Championship as well.

Patrick Cantlay
The 30-year-old from Long Beach, California, is fourth in the world. The reason why Cantlay should be considered a threat is because of his exceptional play in the 2021 FedEx Cup playoffs, where he came out victorious over Rahm.

Collin Morikawa
Morikawa, the seventh ranked player in the world, has proven to be a big game player when he is competing in a major. The Los Angeles native has already won the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 British Open.Â
