In the 18th of a 32-part series, we are featuring all National Football League teams with a prediction of where each team will finish within their division, key off-season acquisitions and their top fantasy stars. Here are the Las Vegas Raiders.
Key Off Season Acquisitions
The fact that the Raiders made a quarterback change in 2023 is no surprise. In is Jimmy Garoppolo of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and out is Derek Carr of Fresno, California, who signed a four-year deal worth $150 million with the New Orleans Saints. There were signs that the Raiders were moving on from Carr at the end of last season, when they benched him in favour of Jarret Stidham of Corbin, Kentucky. Stidham has since signed on with the Denver Broncos.
Garoppolo’s contract is three years and worth $72.75 million. This past season with the San Francisco 49ers, he completed 207 of 308 passes for 2437 yards. Garoppolo had 16 touchdown passes and four interceptions. He also had 23 rushes for 33 yards and two more touchdowns. The touchdown runs came in 49ers wins. The first touchdown run was for one yard and came in a 27-7 49ers win over the Seattle Seahawks on September 18. The second touchdown run was for one yard too and came in a 22-16 49ers win over the Los Angeles Chargers on November 13.
The Raiders also signed wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to a three-year deal worth $33 million. Last season, Meyers had 67 catches for 804 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.
Fantasy Stars
Running back Josh Jacobs of Tulsa, Oklahoma is second among running backs. Last season he had 340 rushes for 1653 rushing yards and 12 touchdown runs. Jacobs also had 53 catches for 400 receiving yards, and led the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 2053.
Davante Adams of Redwood City, California is second among wide receivers. Last season he had 100 catches for 1516 receiving yards and a NFL-high 14 touchdowns.
Kicker Daniel Carlson of Colorado Springs, Colorado is the best in the business. Last season he was the top kicker in fantasy after successfully making 34 of 37 field goals and 35 of 36 converts.
Projected Finish
The Raiders had a record of six wins and 11 losses last year, and were one game better than Denver, which was in the basement at five wins and 12 losses. Yes, the Raiders made a change at quarterback, but there are serious issues with the team. First is their defense, as they gave up 418 points (the third most in the AFC), and the second is actually with Jacobs. The star running back is questionable to join the Raiders because of a contract dispute. With the Broncos now with the very successful Sean Payton as their new head coach, expect Denver to pass Las Vegas in the NFL standings, and the Raiders to be in the basement in the AFC West.
