Sentry Tournament of Champions to include Tour Championship qualifiers

According to the Associated Press on Tuesday, the field will be extended for the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui. Historically the tournament consists of only champions on the PGA Tour from the previous year. However, starting next year the field will also consist of all 30 players who qualified for the Tour Championship, which takes place this weekend in Atlanta to close out the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs.

This will be the same format that was instituted at the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions. Two years ago the field was extended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

By adding the players to the field to include all 30 players in the Tour Championship, the event loses its lustre and historical significance. Except for 2021, only winners on the PGA Tour from the previous year have qualified for the event since Maui first was the host in 1999. It should be noted that the field will be dropped in 2023 as there were players who won earlier on the PGA Tour before joining the LIV Tour. They include Cameron Smith and Hudson Swafford.

The addition of the field to the Sentry Tournament of Champions means there will be eight more golfers in Maui next year who did not win in 2022, but are in Atlanta starting on Thursday. They are Americans Scott Stallings, Collin Morikawa, Brian Harman, Aaron Wise, Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala, Australia’s Adam Scott and Canada’s Corey Conners. Of these eight are two major champions from the past. Scott won the 2013 Masters, while Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 British Open.
