The Philadelphia Eagles were at the centre of the ESPYs on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, California. Their franchise won the award for Team of the Year, and their star player, running back Saquon Barkley of The Bronx, New York, received the award for NFL Play of the Year. It was interesting that the Australian on the Eagles, Jordan Mailata of Bankstown, accepted the award on Barkley’s behalf.
The Eagles were honoured for winning the Super Bowl. In February, the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, for their second Super Bowl title in franchise history. They had a regular season record of 14 wins and three losses and won the NFC East Division title. The Eagles then beat the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, and Washington Commanders in the postseason before upsetting the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Barkley was honoured for his jump over Jarrian Jones of the Jacksonville Jaguars while running with the football and making a first down. The exceptional play came in a 28-23 Eagles win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 3.
Meanwhile, in other Eagles news, former Eagles linebacker Bryan Braman passed away on Thursday at the age of 38 of cancer. Braman played seven seasons in the National Football League from 2011 to 2017. He was with the Texans from 2011 to 2013, and the Eagles from 2014 to 2017, and won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017. Braman played 97 NFL games and had 56 combined tackles (48 solo tackles and eight assisted tackles), two quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, one tackle for a loss and two fumble recoveries.
