Scottie Scheffler moves back to world number one after win in Phoenix
February 14, 2023
Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey has regained the number one world ranking in men’s golf. On Sunday, Scheffler won the 2023 WM Phoenix Open after winning the PGA Tour event on Super Bowl Sunday for the second straight year. Scheffler shot a four round score of -19, to beat Canadian Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba by two strokes.
Scheffler posted rounds of three-under-par 68 in rounds one and three, seven-under-par 64 in round two, and six-under-par 65 in round four. After posting a bogey six on the par-five 13th hole in round three, Scheffler had much better luck on the 13th hole in the final round. That is because he posted a score of an eagle to move from -16 to -18. It was a part of a final round where Scheffler did not have a bogey.
How good has Scheffler been in Phoenix at the WM Phoenix Open the last two years? A year ago he beat fellow American Patrick Cantlay in a playoff after shooting a four-round score of -16. The 2022 WM Phoenix Open was the first of four PGA titles for Scheffler in 2022, as he also won the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida, the 2022 World Matchplay Championships in Texas, and of course the 2022 Masters, for the first major title of his career.
