Scottie Scheffler moves to world number one after World Matchplay Championship win

One of the biggest golf stories of 2022 so far has been the immediate rise of golfer Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey. In 2018, Scheffler was 1589th in the world. On Sunday, the 25-year-old became world number one after winning the 2022 World Golf Championship Dell Technologies Matchplay Championships in Austin, Texas. This was Scheffler’s third PGA Tour win of the season after victories at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month. In the process, Scheffler passed Jon Rahm of Spain to the top spot of the official world golf rankings.

Scheffler was seeded fifth at the World Matchplay Championships. He won Group 5 with a record of two wins and one loss. Scheffler defeated England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Ian Poulter to reach the round of 16. The win over Poulter is significant because of the Englishman’s remarkable singles record at the Ryder Cup over the years. In seven singles matches, Poulter has a record of six wins and one tie.

Due to the fact Scheffler was tied with Fitzpatrick for first place in Group 5, Scheffler and Fitzpatrick went to a sudden death playoff on Friday to determine the winner of the group. Scheffler then became victorious with a birdie on the sixth hole.

Scheffler’s golf skills were put to the test on Saturday and Sunday. Instead of playing the regular 18 holes of golf, he had to play 36 holes each day. On Saturday, Scheffler defeated Billy Horschel of Grant, Florida 1 up in the round of 16. This was a rematch of the 2021 WGC Matchplay Championship, of which Horschel was victorious. Scheffler then beat Seamus Power of Ireland 3&2 in the quarterfinals, Dustin Johnson of the United States  3&1 in the semifinals, and then Kevin Kisner of the United States 4&3 in the finals.
