Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, won the 2021 CJ Cup at the Summit Club in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday. McIlroy had a four-round score of -25, and in the process beat 2021 British Open champion Collin Morikawa of the United States by a single stroke. By being in the winner’s circle, McIlroy became the 39th player to win 20 times on the PGA Tour.
In the four rounds in Las Vegas this weekend, McIlroy began with an opening round of four-under-par 68. That was followed by a five-under-par 67 in round two, 10-under-par 62 in round three, and a six-under-par 66 in round four. In McIlroy’s magical third round, he had eight birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole.
The fact that McIlroy put together a four-round score of -25 is noteworthy when you consider the fact he had a terrible Ryder Cup in September. McIlroy did not get anything going whatsoever during the team competitions at Whistling Straits. He lost one match 5 & 3, and two matches 4 & 3. What was also surprising is that McIlroy had minimal chemistry with Ian Poulter, who has been known throughout his golf career for his Ryder Cup success.
McIlroy’s 20 career wins places him in a tie with Americans Hale Irwin, Doug Sanders, and Johnny Revolta, along with Australian legend Greg Norman. Sam Snead and Tiger Woods are tied with 82 wins, the most all-time.
McIlroy is seventh on the list among players born outside the United States. He is behind Fiji’s Vijay Singh (34 wins), England’s Harry Cooper (29 wins), Scotland’s Macdonald Smith (25 wins), South Africa’s Gary Player (24 wins), England’s Jim Barnes (22 wins), and Scotland’s Willie Macfarlane (21 wins).
Among active players, McIlroy is ranked fourth. He is only behind Woods, Phil Mickelson (45 wins), and Dustin Johnson (24 wins).
