For the 13th time in his professional career, Justin Rose of London, England is a PGA Tour champion. However what we saw on Sunday in San Diego, California was simply pure dominance. Rose not only beat the field, he clobbered it.
Rose posted a winning score of -23, and beat his nearest competitors by a converted touchdown. The seven stroke victory was the most dominant win of his PGA Tour career. Rose did have an eight stroke win on the Asian Tour in 2017 when he beat Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand by eight strokes after posting a winning score of -29 to win the Indonesian Masters.
Last season, Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, had the largest margin of victory. He posted a score of -31 to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by eight strokes. The only other golfer to win a tournament on the PGA Tour last season by seven strokes was Thomas Detry of Belgium, who won the Phoenix Open, with a score of -24. It just so happened that Detry won by a converted touchdown on the same day that the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX.
There were three golfers at Torrey Pines who were tied for second place. They were American Pierceson Coody, South Korea’s Si Woo Kim and Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune.
Rose had a first round score of ten-under-par 62, a second round score of seven-under-par 65, a third round score of four-under-par 68, and a fourth round score of two-under-par 70. Rose had one eagle in his round. In happened in the second round on the par five sixth hole. With the win, the 2013 United States Open champion went from 10th in the world to number three.
