Iga Swiatek wins 2022 United States Open

Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland won the 2022 United States Women’s Open on Saturday. She defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-2, 7-6 in the final. This was Swiatek’s third grand slam women’s singles championship as she previously beat American Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 in the 2020 French Open and American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the 2022 French Open.
In the women’s final on Saturday, Swiatek won in one hour and 51 minutes. The serve was a massive difference in the first set. Swiatek had a first serve percentage of 90%, while Jabeur was only at 48%. Swiatek also won 12 of 19 points on her first serve, while Jabeur only won 20% of her first serve points.
Swiatek also had five more winners (19) compared to only 14 for Jabeur. Swiatek also had three fewer unforced errors (30) compared to 33 for Jabeur.

Swiatek is the only Polish grand slam tennis champion in the history of tennis at any level. Her remarkable 2022 tennis season continues. She has also won the Qatar Open, BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open, and French Open. The win at Flushing Meadows on Sunday was the second time that Swiatek beat Jabeur in a final in 2022. Swiatek previously beat Jabeur 6-2, 6-2 at the Italian Open.
The men’s final will take place on Sunday afternoon. The world number one will be on the line as Norway’s Casper Ruud faces Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Ruud is the fifth seed and Alcaraz is the third seed.
In other women’s news, the WTA Finals have been moved from China to Fort Worth, Texas. Garbine Muguruza of Spain is the defending champion.
