Adam Reynolds has played his final NRL game after persistent calf problems denied the Brisbane captain the farewell appearance he desperately wanted.
The Broncos confirmed Reynolds would be unavailable for their remaining matches against Melbourne and Canterbury, bringing his decorated 323-game career to an immediate end.
Reynolds had already announced that 2026 would be his final NRL season, but hoped to make one last appearance at Suncorp Stadium before retiring.
“All NRL careers come to an end and unfortunately mine is today,” Reynolds said.
“I won’t be playing this week or next week.”
Calf Injuries Deny Reynolds Farewell Game
Reynolds attempted to prove his fitness at Brisbane training but was unable to convince coach Michael Maguire and the club’s medical staff that he could safely return.
“The left calf was giving me nerve issues, and then I had a little grade one strain in the right calf which has not bounced back as quickly as I would’ve liked,” Reynolds explained in the Broncos’ official retirement statement.
“I trained today and thought I would be a chance to play one last home game, but it’s not to be.”
Reynolds said he felt reasonably comfortable during the session, but Brisbane remained concerned about the limited amount of training he had completed over the previous weeks.
Allowing him to play a brief ceremonial role against the Storm would have created an emotional farewell, but the Broncos correctly prioritised his health and the requirements of the team.
The decision means Reynolds’ last NRL appearance came before his recent concussion and calf problems removed him from Brisbane’s side.
Two Premierships Across Two Clubs
Reynolds finishes his career with 323 first-grade appearances across 15 seasons with South Sydney and Brisbane.
He made his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs against the Sydney Roosters in 2012 after growing up near Redfern Oval and progressing through South Sydney’s junior system.
Two years later, Reynolds helped the Rabbitohs defeat Canterbury in the 2014 grand final, ending the club’s 43-year premiership drought.
He spent 10 seasons with South Sydney, played more than 230 games and became the club’s all-time leading points scorer before leaving at the end of 2021.
Brisbane offered Reynolds the long-term security South Sydney would not, appointing him captain immediately after his arrival in 2022.
The move ultimately transformed both the halfback and the Broncos.
Reynolds guided Brisbane into the 2023 grand final before leading the club to its first premiership in 19 years in 2025.
He produced four tries, 17 try assists and 81 goals during that premiership season, converting at 85 per cent.
Reynolds Leaves as NRL’s Second-Highest Scorer
Reynolds retires with more than 2,500 career points, placing him second on the NRL’s all-time scoring list.
His greatest strengths extended beyond his goal-kicking record.
Reynolds possessed one of the competition’s most accurate kicking games, controlled field position and gave younger teammates the structure required to develop around him.
His arrival at Red Hill helped accelerate the careers of Brisbane’s emerging stars while restoring standards within a club that had won the wooden spoon only two years earlier.
“I had a fair mentorship coming through and that’s all I’ve ever wanted to be towards younger fellas,” Reynolds said.
“I would like to think that I’ve contributed to a fair few people in my time playing rugby league.”
No Fairytale Finish but Nothing Left to Prove
Reynolds had hoped to finish his career on the field in front of Brisbane supporters.
Instead, the physical problems that followed him throughout the closing years of his career made the decision for him.
There will inevitably be disappointment that a player of his stature was denied a proper farewell match, but one symbolic appearance was never worth risking further damage to either calf.
The 36-year-old also retires having completed the mission that brought him to Queensland.
South Sydney’s reluctance to offer Reynolds a longer contract was widely debated when he departed, and Brisbane’s decision to recruit him was repeatedly questioned because of his age and injury history.
He answered those doubts by captaining the Broncos to two grand finals and delivering the premiership the club had chased since 2006.
“I’ve had a great career,” Reynolds said.
“I’m extremely fortunate I get to carry some great memories moving forward.”
Reynolds Staying With Broncos
Retirement will not end Reynolds’ association with Brisbane.
The veteran playmaker is expected to transition into a coaching and mentoring position, allowing the Broncos to retain his tactical knowledge and influence over their emerging halves.
The Sporting Base previously reported that Reynolds already had his next role lined up with the Broncos.
His work with Brisbane’s young playmakers could prove particularly important as the club begins life without the organising halfback who directed its attack for five seasons.
Reynolds did not receive the farewell appearance he wanted, but his final meaningful image remains considerably more powerful.
He retires as a premiership-winning captain, a South Sydney great, the second-highest scorer in NRL history and the player who helped return Brisbane to the top of rugby league.
