Reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California, and Trey Mullinax of Birmingham, Alabama both won the final PGA events on the golf calendar before the British Open, which starts on Thursday. Schauffele posted a four-round score of -7 to win the 2022 Scottish Open for his second win in three weeks. Just last month he won the 2022 Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, where he beat J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala of the United States by two strokes.
In the 2022 Scottish Open in North Berwick, Scotland this week, Schauffele won the tournament with 17 birdies and an eagle. His eagle came on the 10th hole in the second round on Friday. Schauffele’s most successful hole was the par-five 16th, which he birdied on three occasions. He won the tournament despite registering a bogey in the second, third, and fourth rounds on the 18th hole.
Schauffele’s -7 was one stroke better than Kurt Kitayama of the United States, who was at -6. Joohyung Kim of South Korea was at -5. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood of England and Patrick Cantlay of the United States were tied at -4 and in fourth place. Fleetwood, who shot back-to-back rounds of 67, was one of there of the golfers we liked prior to the start of the Scottish Open.
On the American stop on the PGA Tour this week, Trey Mullinax of Birmingham, Alabama won the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky with a score of -25. Mullinax beat Kevin Streelman of Winfield, Illinois by a stroke and Mark Hubbard of Denver, Colorado by three strokes.
