Vikings sign quarterback Daniel Jones
November 28, 2024
According to Jon Alfano of Sports Illustrated on Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings have signed quarterback Daniel Jones of Charlotte, North Carolina. Jones has spent the last six seasons with the New York Giants. However, last week Jones asked for his release from the Big Apple, and his request was granted.
Jones was the Giants’s first round pick, sixth overall, in the 2019 National Football League Draft. He was the second quarterback selected in 2019. The first was Kyler Murray of Bedford, Texas, who was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals.
There was a hope in New York that Jones would lead the Giants to greatness after Eli Manning retired. There were signs of exceptional play and promise, but overall, Jones was considered a disappointment with the Giants.
In 69 gamed as a starter, Jones only won 24 times. Over the last two seasons, he only won three games. In 2023, Jones had an abysmal quarterback rating of 36.3. This year it was not too much better at 46.3. He completed 216 passes in 341 attempts for 2070 passing yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Jones also had 67 rushes for 265 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
With the Vikings, do not expect Jones to be the starting quarterback anytime soon. This is clearly Sam Darnold’s job this season. While Darnold has not always been spectacular, he has been a great game manager. The Vikings have won nine of 11 games, and Darnold has a quarterback rating of 101.7. Darnold does have one thing in common with Jones. Both quarterbacked in New York, with Darnold being with the Jets.
