The 2025 Masters tournament begins on Thursday. We found out on Monday, that there is another major champion joining Tiger Woods on the sidelines. That is Fiji’s Vijay Singh, who is out with a back problem, according to Steve Gardner of USA Today.
Singh won the Masters in 2000. That year he posted a four round score of -10 and beat South Africa’s Ernie Els by three strokes. At the 2000 Masters, there were only eight players heading into the fourth round under par. Joining Woods, Els and Singh were Americans David Duval, Loren Roberts, Davis Love III, and Phil Mickelson, and Canada’s Mike Weir. Singh enjoyed a comfortable three stroke lead over Duval after 54 holes, and then put together a fourth round score of three-under-par 69 thanks to six birdies and three bogeys.
Singh’s other two major titles came at the 1998 and 2004 PGA Championship. In 1998, Singh had a score of nine-under-par and beat Wisconsin’s Steve Stricker by two strokes at the Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Washington. Then six years later, Singh had a score of -8 and beat Americans Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard in a three-hole playoff in Stricker’s home state of Wisconsin. Singh won despite a double bogey on the par-four fourth hole.
Woods is not playing at the Masters this year due to a foot injury. This is Woods’s second notable injury he has had since September. Seven months ago he had back surgery.
Singh is considered the greatest Fijian golfer of all-time and one of the greatest Fijian athletes ever. He was ranked number one in the world in 2004 and again in 2005.
