Top five headlines from Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season
October 18, 2023
Week six of the 2023 National Football League regular season is now complete. Here are the top five headlines.
5) Justin Tucker ties own Ravens record for most field goals in a game.
Justin Tucker of Houston, Texas tied his own Baltimore Ravens’s franchise record for most field goals in a game with six on Sunday. He accomplished the feat in a 24-16 win over the Tennessee Titans in England. Tucker initially had six field goals in an 18-16 Ravens win over the Detroit Lions on December 16, 2013. Even though Tucker had six field goals on Sunday, he missed his lone convert attempt. With the win, the Ravens improved to a record of four wins and two losses, and lead the AFC North.
4) Anthony Richardson’s shoulder injury is serious.
It appears the shoulder injury for Indianapolis Colts’s star quarterback Anthony Richardson is more serious than first thought. According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, he could be done for the season. In four games this season, Richardson, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, completed 50 of 84 passes for 577 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception, along with 25 rushes for 136 rushing yards, and four more touchdowns.
3) Jaguars move into first in the AFC South.
The Jacksonville Jaguars won a key game on the weekend as they defeated the Colts 37-20. This was a battle for first place in the AFC South as both teams were at three wins and two losses heading into the matchup. But without Richardson, it could be tough for the Colts the rest of the way. In keeping with the kicker theme, the Jaguars star on Sunday was kicker Brandon McManus of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who kicked field goals of 48, 49, and 51 yards.
2) Detroit Lions win statement game.
We all know how good the Detroit Lions’s offense is when quarterback Jared Goff is on. However, on Sunday, we saw how good the Lions’s defense can be in a 20-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Detroit limited Tampa Bay to 206 yards passing and 46 yards rushing. With the win, the Lions improved to a 5-1 record and are the best in the NFC North.
1) Eagles and 49ers lose their first of the year.
Philadelphia and San Francisco came into the weekend undefeated, and huge favourites to go 6-0. But Philadelphia lost 20-14 to the New York Jets and San Francisco lost 19-17 to the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles were a 6.5 point favourite, and the 49ers were a 9.5 point favourite. However, the Eagles looked disjointed offensively and confused against an underrated Jets defense. Meanwhile, the 49ers ran into injury issues to star running back Christian McCaffrey (oblique) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder), and could not stop Browns’s wide receiver Amari Cooper of Miami, Florida (108 yards receiving).
