Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley returned a positive preliminary indication in a random roadside drug test on Monday, the club has confirmed, with results from a second sample not expected for at least four weeks.
The Swans released a statement on Wednesday evening saying Papley was pulled over by NSW Police for a roadside licence check on Monday 2 November.
During that stop, he was issued with a court attendance notice for driving with a suspended licence. The club said the suspension was due to non-payment of a parking fine.
What the Swans said
“During the roadside stop, Papley completed a random drug test which returned a positive preliminary test indication. A second sample was taken for analysis. The results from the second test are expected to take at least four weeks,” the statement said.
“Papley immediately advised the Club regarding this matter and the Club subsequently informed the AFL.”

What happens next
A preliminary roadside result is not a final finding. Under the NSW process, a sample is sent away for further testing, and a drug driving charge only follows if that testing confirms the presence of an illegal drug, according to the NSW Government.
The Swans said they would make no further comment pending the outcome of the police process. Papley has not commented publicly.

Papley played 20 games for Sydney in 2026, kicking 33 goals, and finished ninth in the club’s best and fairest, according to Zero Hanger.
