Dane Rampe Retires: Swans Great Calls Time After 289 Games

Sydney Swans champion Dane Rampe has retired from the AFL, ending a 14-season career that delivered 289 games, an All-Australian blazer and a Bob Skilton Medal.

The Swans confirmed the decision in a club statement, with the 36-year-old defender saying he “simply” had “nothing left to give”. AAP also reported the retirement.

Drafted with pick 37 in the 2012 Rookie Draft, Rampe debuted in Round 1, 2013 and went on to play 289 games in the red and white. That is the seventh-most by any player in South Melbourne/Sydney history, and the second-most by a player taken off the club’s rookie list.

“This has been an incredibly hard decision to make. I have given every part of my heart and soul to this place, and as much as I wish it were otherwise, I simply have nothing left to give. I share this not from a place of exhaustion or defeat, but from one of overwhelming pride and gratitude,” Rampe said.

One of the Swans’ most decorated defenders

Rampe earned All-Australian selection in 2016, won the Bob Skilton Medal as Sydney’s club champion in 2019 and took out the AFLPA’s Robert Rose Award for most courageous player in 2020. He was Swans co-captain from 2019 to 2023 and is a club life member.

He stepped back in as stand-in captain for the rest of the 2026 finals series after skipper Callum Mills suffered an ACL injury. His 25th and final final came in this year’s preliminary final, leaving him fourth on the club’s finals list behind Adam Goodes (28), Jarrad McVeigh (28) and Jude Bolton (26).

“I grew up dreaming of wearing the red and white,” Rampe said. “The Sydney Swans felt like home long before I ever walked through the door, and to have not only played for this club, but to have led it, has been perhaps the greatest privilege of my life.”

“What an absolute champion”

John Longmire, who coached Rampe in 251 of his 289 games, led the tributes. “No player has been more trusted by his coaches and teammates than Dane Rampe, and that is the highest praise any player could wish for,” Longmire said. “I never coached a more athletic, fiercely competitive, personable, empathetic or quality human than Dane Rampe. What a privilege, and what an absolute champion.”

Senior coach Dean Cox said: “Ramps is an amazing leader whose legacy on this Club will last for decades. He gave everything to this football club, and we are a better club for having him over the last 14 years.”

Chairman Andrew Pridham said Rampe was “a key member in four grand final appearances, including in 2016, the season he earned All Australian selection”, while CEO and former Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich added: “He will be remembered as one of the great Sydney Swans players.”

Rampe said that in the coming months he looks forward “to thanking the players, coaches, staff and fans in the way each of them truly deserves”.
