The Plunge’s Saturday Review: Horses You Must Follow From Randwick 6/3

An exciting 3yo sprinter that looks ready to take the next step and a rising 4yo that looks a great chance in the Doncaster back at WFA conditions are my two horses to follow from Saturday’s Randwick Guineas meeting.

The Plunge’s Service Results:
  • +31.2 units of profit since December
  • 34 bets: 12 wins /11 placings

Wild Ruler

  • Race 1
  • Distance 1100m
  • Class: Listed Fireball Stake

Wild Ruler stepped out for his first run this preparation in the Listed Fireball Stakes and easily put away a field of up and coming 3yos.

Wild Ruler jumped well and was quickly headed by Mamaragan who went on to set blistering early sectionals. J Mac sat four lengths off the tear away leader in second and was forced to cart the field up.

Mamaragan quickly faded and eventually finished 4L away last in the small field. The race shaped nicely for the likes of Andermatt, Doubtland and On the Lead to finish strong from the tail of the field but when asked to deliver Wild Ruler pinned the ears back and let down a strong run to win by 1.3L over place getters he was giving away 3kg to due to the set weight with penalty conditions.

When To Bet

Wild Ruler looks ready to step up to some of the feature sprint races this autumn. The G1 Galaxy on Slipper day looks like a possibility where he will get in well at the weights in handicap conditions. Keep in mind may come up against the likes of Eduardo and Nature Strip but he is definitely a 3yo sprinter for the future.

Masked Crusader

Masked Crusader is a lightly raced 4yo that I have had my eye on since he entered my black book after an impressive trial back on January. He was up against it going up 5.5kg under G1 WFA conditions since his 1st up win under handicap conditions.

After missing the kick from barrier 2 he was forced to settle at the rear of the field but worked his way into the race at the turn when he came across heels and let down a huge run to finish 3rd making horses like Dreamforce and Bivouac look like 2nd raters as he went past them.

When To Bet

I really like this guy. He’s shown he can do it at G1 level under weight for age conditions and now I’d love to see him go back to handicap conditions where he should be well weighted. He looks like he is crying out for 1400m-1600m and the Hawkes team may be eyeballing the G1 George Ryder and the Doncaster.
