A week ago we speculated that Serena Williams would be playing singles at Wimbledon in 2026. On Sunday, the rumour was no longer a speculation. Serena Williams of Saginaw, Michigan will be attempting to win her 24th career grand slam singles title when she takes to the court next week in England.
The reason why the fact it was so easy to predict that Serena Williams would play in Wimbledon singles is because of the decisions made by Wimbledon organizers. Last week when the wildcards were announced, and there was one spot still open on the women’s side. They reportedly gave Williams more time to make a decision and she decided to give the singles draw an opportunity for the first time since losing in the third round at the 2022 United States Open to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.
Serena will not just be competing in singles. She will be playing doubles too. Serena is teaming up with her sister Venus Williams of Lynwood, California.
It is interesting that Serena Williams is one of two non-British players who received a wildcard in the women’s draw. The other was Maja Chawlinska of Poland, the 2026 French Open finalist.
Now the question will be whether or not Serena can make a legitimate run toward winning the title, and if the two doubles matches at Queen’s and Berlin are enough when it comes to preparation. At age 44, Williams believes she has more left in the tank, or she would not be making a comeback. Something that is fuelling Williams’s fire is the fact she is only one grand slam singles title back of Margaret Court’s 24 titles for the most grand slams ever in women’s tennis.
