According to John Breech of CBS Sports, Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel of Orlando, Florida has retired at the age of 28. Michel played five seasons in the National Football League with the New England Patriots (2018 to 2020), Los Angeles Rams (2021), and Los Angeles Chargers (2022).

Even though Michel played with the Chargers last season, he returned to the Rams in 2023, the team he played for the previous season in 2021. Michel was released by the Chargers on New Year’s Eve of 2022, and then signed with the Rams on a one-year contact worth $1.08 million according to spotrac.com.

Michel played in 10 games for the Chargers in 2022. He had 36 rushes for 106 yards and nine catches for 53 yards.

In Michel’s career, he played in 65 National Football League regular season games. He had 779 rushes for 3243 rushing yards, and 18 rushing touchdowns. Michel also had 56 catches for  439 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.

Michel was not in the NFL for long, but was a two-time Super Bowl champion. He was with the Patriots when New England won the Super Bowl in 2019. Michel had 18 carries for 94 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown in a 13-3 Patriots win over the Los Angeles Rams. Then in 2022, Michel was on the Rams team that won their second Super Bowl in franchise history, and first Super Bowl in Los Angeles. Their other Super Bowl in 2000 came with the St. Louis Rams.

The fact that Michel retired, was a surprise to many according to Breech. However, in a statement, Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that Michel was having issues with his body and had made peace with his decision.
