The 2024 United States Open starts Thursday from Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, North Cariolina. This is the fourth time Pinehurst has hosted the U.S. Open, and first time since 2014. Here are the three golfers we like the most for the third major of the year.

It has well been documented on The Sporting Base how dominant Scheffler has been in 2024. When he won the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, it was his fifth title of the year. He is the fastest player to win five tournaments in a calendar year in 44 years according to Taylor Made. Â Just how much is Scheffler the favourite to win the third major of the year? Well, he is currently at +290. According to ESPN Bet, he is the lowest favourite entering a U.S. Open since 2009 when Tiger Woods won.

Xander Schauffele
There have been two major winners this year. Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey won the Masters and Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California won the PGA Championship. When Schauffele won the last major, he had a score of -21, the best four-round score in the history of men’s golf. The PGA Championship victory also put Schauffele into second place in the Official Golf World Rankings. Schauffele has been in the top 25 in his last nine PGA events, including an eighth place at the Memorial.

Rory McIlroy
A month ago there were rumours swirling that world number three Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland was in the process of getting divorced. Now this week, McIlroy announced that the divorce will no longer happen, and he has reconciled with wife Erica Stoll, of seven years. He should be in the proper head space now to be a serious contender at the U.S. Open this week.
