The 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions takes on a different shape this year in Hawaii. They will include golfers who qualified for the 2022 Tour Championship in Atlanta. That means golfers did not have to win on the PGA Tour last year to get an invitation. Here are three golfers worth considering:
1)Â Jon Rahm
We all know about Cameron Smith’s record-breaking performance a year ago when he went -34. You may not remember that Jon Rahm of Spain was only one stroke back at -33. Ernie Els of South Africa had the previous best four-hole record on the PGA Tour as he was -31 at the 2003 Tournament of Champions. Rahm won on the PGA Tour last year in Mexico.

2) Patrick Cantlay
A year ago, the 30-year-old American from Long Beach, California shot a -26 at the Tournament of Champions, good enough for fourth place. During the 2022 calendar year, Cantlay won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele. He also won the BMW Championship during the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs. One of the most heart warming stories in golf today is the fact how Cantlay has been able to rebound mentally and become a golf superstar. In 2016, Cantlay’s caddie Chris Roth died as a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident in Newport Beach, California.

3) Justin Thomas
The 29-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky won his second major of his career in 2022 when he won the PGA Championship. In a playoff, Thomas beat fellow American Will Zalatoris. A year ago Thomas tied for fifth place at the 2022 Tournament of Champions.
