Nick Kyrgios plans to play at the Brisbane International
November 16, 2024

According to the Associated Press on Friday, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is set to play at the Brisbane International, and then at the 2025 Australian Open. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist has only played one match the last two years. That came at the 2023 Stuttgart Open in Germany, where he lost 7-5, 6-3 to Yibing Wu of China.
The major reason why Kyrgios has not played much the last two years has come down to injuries. He has had ailments to his wrist and knee. Kyrgios also lacerated his foot near his pinkie toe during a family robbery in Australia. During this tragic incident, Kyrgios’s mother was held at gunpoint and Kyrgios’s car was stolen.
Kyrgios has also had to deal with some mental health issues over the years. He at one time entered a psychiatric ward after losing to Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon in 2019.
Kyrgios has had success at the Brisbane International in the past. He won the tournament back in 2018. In the final, Kyrgios beat American Ryan Harrison 6-4, 6-2. In addition to Harrison, Kyrgios beat fellow Australian Matthew Ebden of Perth in the second round, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. Dimitrov is a three-time grand slam semifinalist as he made the final four of the 2014 Wimbledon, 2017 Australian Open and 2019 United States Open.
In all, Kyrgios has won seven career titles. In addition to the 2018 Brisbane International, he won the 2016 Open 13 in Marseille, France, the 2016 Atlanta Open, the 2016 Japan Open, the 2019 Mexican Open, and the 2019 and 2022 Washington Open.
