There is now a two-way tie for the lead in women’s golf of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris as round two leader Morgane Metraux of Lausanne, Switzerland is now tied for the lead with Lydia Ko of New Zealand at -9. What is stunning is that Ko and Metraux are ranked over 100 spots apart in the Rolex World Golf Rankings. Ko is 22nd, while Matreaux is 137th.
In round three, Ko shot a score of four-under-par 68 to move from five-under-par to nine-under-par. She made six birdies and had two bogeys on Friday. Ko birdied the third, sixth, ninth, 10th, 14th and 17th holes, and bogeyed the seventh and 12th holes.
Metraux battled the course, and came away with only a score of one-under-par. Her scoreline included three birdies, four bogeys and one eagle. Metraux birdied the first, ninth, and 14th holes, bogeyed the fifth, 10th, 12th and 13th holes, and closed out her third round with a key eagle on the 18th hole. The fact that Metraux finished her round with an eagle should give her a boost of confidence.
Ko, meanwhile, is looking for her third career Olympic medal. She won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. So far in Paris, Ko shot a first round score of even par 72, and a second round score of five-under-par 67.
On Wednesday in the first round, Ko had four birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. She birdied the third, eighth, 13th, and 18th holes, bogeyed the first and 10th holes, and double bogeyed the 15th hole. On Thursday in the second round, Ko had six birdies and one bogey. She birdied the second, third, sixth, ninth, 10th, and 13th holes, and bogeyed the 18th hole.
Ko is a two-time major champion as she won the 2015 Evian Championship and the 2016 Ana Inspiration. There are three more players in contention. Rose Zhang of the United States and Miyu Yamashita of Japan are tied for third at -7, and Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul is alone in fifth at -6.
