All of a sudden, Lucas Glover of Greenville, South Carolina is the hottest golfer on the planet. The 2009 United States Open champion has now won back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour. After winning the Wyndham Championship a week ago, Glover won the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday from TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee on the opening weekend of the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Glover posted a four round score of -15 and beat Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California in a playoff. Cantlay has had great FedEx Cup playoff success in the past, as he was the 2021 FedEx Cup Playoff champion. In the playoff, Glover posted a score of par on the 18th hole, while Cantlay had a bogey. During the four rounds of play, Glover had a score of four-under par 66 in the first round, six-under par 64 in the second round, four-under par 66 in the third round, and one-under par 69 in the fourth round.
Three other golfers were in contention during the tournament. Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Tommy Fleetwood of England were tied for third at -14 and Taylor Moore of San Angelo, Texas was in fifth place at -12. McIlroy’s major titles came at the 2011 United States Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and the 2014 British Open. It should be noted that McIlroy has had FedEx Cup Playoff success too, as he won the 2022 playoff.
There are two more weeks of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Fifty golfers will compete next weekend in Chicago, and then 30 golfers will compete the following weekend in Atlanta.
