USA wins gold in Olympic men’s basketball
August 10, 2021
The United States has won Olympic gold in men’s basketball at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. On Saturday, the Americans won their fourth consecutive gold medal in the Olympic men’s basketball competition by beating France 87-82. The Americans got revenge against France, as they lost to the French earlier in the Olympic tournament, 89-79.
In the gold medal game, Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets scored 29 points to lead Team USA. It was the third straight game that Durant led the U.S. in scoring as he had 29 points in a 95-81 win over Spain in the quarterfinals, and 23 points in a 97-78 win over Australia in the semifinals.
This was the 20th Olympic men’s basketball tournament, and the United States has now won 16 times. It is easier to list the years they have not won–(the Soviet Union in 1972 and 1988, Yugoslavia in 1980, and  Argentina in 2004). Meanwhile, for the first time, Australia won an Olympic medal in men’s basketball, as the Boomers beat Slovenia 107-93 to win the bronze medal.
Speaking of dominance in Olympic basketball history, American women have done just that. They have not lost a game since being beaten by the Commonwealth of Independent States (what they called Russia and its former neighbouring countries which were previously part of the Soviet Union at the time), 79-73 in the semifinals of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.Â
On Sunday, the United States trounced Japan 90-75 in the gold medal game. There is no doubt that the Americans had a significant height advantage over the Japanese as the Japanese Women’s Basketball Team had no players listed taller than 6’1″. Meanwhile, France won bronze in women’s basketball by beating Serbia 91-76.
