Jaguars name Urban Meyer new head coach
January 16, 2021

According to Michael DiRocco of ESPN on Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars have named Urban Meyer of Toledo, Ohio their new head coach. Meyer may not be a household name in the National Football League, but has been over the last two decades in college football as he has coached the University of Florida Gators to two national championships, and the Ohio State Buckeyes to one.
In Jacksonville, Meyer is taking over from Doug Marrone, who has coached the Jaguars the last four seasons. This past year the Jaguars had the worst record in the NFL at one win and 15 losses.
Even though the Jaguars only won one game the entire season, (a 27-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts in week one before they lost a remarkable 15 straight), there are things to like about the Jaguars. For one, running back James Robinson was simply outstanding, as he had 1070 rushing yards, which tied with David Montgomery of the Chicago Bears for fifth-most in the NFL. Second, the Jaguars will get the number one pick in the 2021 draft and six picks in the top 100.
The feeling at this time is that the Jaguars will take a chance on Trevor Lawrence from the University of Clemson. Lawrence was instrumental in guiding the Tigers to the 2019 College Football National Championship, as Clemson hammered the University of Alabama Crimson Tide 44-16.
The hiring of Meyer is also interesting given the fact that he has had health issues in the past. Among the issues Meyer has had include a cyst on the brain which caused headaches, and frequent chest pains. The health problems forced him to leave both Ohio State and Florida.
