Xander Schauffele wins 2022 Travelers Championship

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California won his second PGA Tournament of 2022 on Sunday. However the victory at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, just outside of Hartford, was Schauffele’s first individual win of 2022 as he previously won with reigning FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay at the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Schauffele posted a score of -19 to beat Americans J.T. Poston of Hickory, North Carolina and Sahith Theegala of Orange, California by two strokes each. Schauffele has now won six PGA events. His two most notable titles were the 2017 Tour Championship and the 2018 WGC-HSBC Champions.

Just like In-gee Chun at the Women’s PGA Championship who was marvelous after the first two rounds and hung on to win, the story was similar this past weekend for Schauffele at the Travelers Championship. Schauffele was excellent in the first two rounds, as he shot back-to-back rounds of seven-under-par 63 to move to -14. Those brilliant first 36 holes were followed by a round of three-under-par 67 and two-under-par 68.

In those 36 holes, Schauffele had 14 birdies and zero bogeys. Schauffele only had three bogeys the entire weekend. He had a score of six on the par-five 13th hole on Saturday, and then a score of five on the par-four 2nd hole and a score of five on the par-four 12th hole on Sunday.

If you include the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this year, (who Schauffele teamed up with Cantlay), Schauffele has now posted a total score of -71 in his last three tournament titles on the PGA Tour. That score is -89 if you include the Olympic Games.
