Christopher Eubanks becomes the top story of 2023 Wimbledon

The biggest story of Wimbledon is the fact that unseeded American Christopher Eubanks of Atlanta, Georgia is all of a sudden one of the eight quarterfinalists in the men’s draw. The sudden rise in the ATP World Rankings (from 77th to 43rd) was precipitated by his shocking title win on grass at the Mallorca Championships in Spain on Canada Day. Then over the first week at Wimbledon this past week, Eubanks won four impressive men’s singles matches to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Eubanks opened Wimbledon with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3  first round win over Thiago Monteiro of Brazil. That was followed by a stunning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over the 12th seed Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, the 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist and 2021 Indian Wells champion. In round three, Eubanks beat Australian Christopher O’Connell of Sydney 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Then that was followed by the match of Eubanks’s life on Monday. The 27-year-old late bloomer from Georgia Tech stunned the tennis world with a 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over the two-time grand slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. Tsitsipas reached the final of the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open, before losing twice to Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

On Monday, Eubanks was the player in control throughout the match, and was filled with confidence. He had 53 winners compared to 37 for Tsitsipas. Eubanks was also very effective at the net as he won 46 points compared to 21 for Tsitsipas. The match lasted three hours and four minutes. Tsitsipas was the first player Eubanks has ever beaten ranked in the top 10.

To put Eubanks’s stunning quarterfinal berth into perspective, you have to look at his career major record before Wimbledon this year. It was an abysmal two wins and eight losses.

When Eubanks won the Mallorca Open earlier this summer, he beat Adrian Mannarino of France in the final, 6-1, 6-4. Eubanks also beat American Alex Michelsen of Aliso Viejo, California 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the first round, 2023 Australian Open American quarterfinalist Ben Shelton of Gainesville, Florida 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the second round, Arthur Rinderknech of France 7-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, and Lloyd Harris of South Africa 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Eubanks will face Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the third seed. In their only prior meeting, Medvedev beat Eubanks 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of Miami in March.  The other three quarterfinal matchups have Djokovic versus Andrey Rublev of Russia, Jannik Sinner of Italy versus Roman Safiullin of Russia, and Carlos Alcaraz of Spain versus Holger Rune of Denmark. On the women’s side, the four quarterfinal matches have Jessica Pegula of the United States versus Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, Iga Swiatek of Poland versus Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus versus Madison Keys of the United States and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan against Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
