According to Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel on Thursday, 2020 United States Open golf champion Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California has parted ways with his caddie, Tim Tucker. The split occurred immediately before the beginning of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club, which commenced on Thursday.
The timing of the DeChambeau/Tucker split was a little bizarre. That is because DeChambeau is trying to defend the Rocket Mortgage Classic from last year. In 2020, DeChambeau shot a marvelous four-round score of -23 to beat American Matthew Wolff by three strokes.
DeChambeau’s victory from a year ago proved that the retransformation of his entire golf game was working. During the coronavirus stoppage, DeChambeau bulked up, and made his tee shots a top priority. No longer was he comfortable to get to the green with two shots. He was aiming for the green with a single shot off the tee on many occasions.
Then when DeChambeau won the United States Open, many golf analysts were actually surprised because they felt he was not taking the right approach heading into the toughest major in the world. They felt DeChambeau needed to make adjustments rather than rely on his outstanding shot making from his driver. DeChambeau proved the pundits wrong and won by six strokes. Just like Detroit, Wolff was in second place.
In the 2021 calendar year, DeChambeau does have a victory (the Arnold Palmer Invitiational),but clearly he was disappointed with his results at majors this season. They were a 46th at the Masters, a 38th at the PGA Championship, and a 26th at the United States Open. For a golfer ranked sixth in the world and off to the British Open and then the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, those results are not good enough, and as a result it was the caddie who paid the price.
