NBA: Lakers Predicted to Beat Cavaliers in Race for De’Anthony Melton as NBA Free Agency Heats Up

The Los Angeles Lakers may have already enjoyed a productive offseason, but one key piece could still be missing. According to multiple NBA reports, the Lakers are emerging as the favourites to sign free-agent guard De’Anthony Melton in a move that could significantly strengthen their perimeter defence.

Melton has become one of the most sought-after remaining free agents after returning from the ACL injury that limited him early in the 2025-26 season. Several teams have expressed interest, but league insiders believe the Lakers are well-positioned to outbid fellow contenders, including the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It’s easy to understand why.

Even at this stage of his career, LeBron remains a franchise-altering player.

At 28, Melton has built a reputation as one of the NBA’s premier “3-and-D” guards. His ability to defend multiple positions while knocking down three-pointers makes him an ideal fit alongside high-usage stars, and it’s a skill set every championship contender covets.

For the Lakers, the fit appears particularly strong.

With Luka Dončić now leading the franchise following LeBron James’ departure in free agency, Los Angeles has shifted its focus toward building a younger, more defensive-minded roster. The additions of Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton have already improved the team’s depth, but Melton would provide another elite perimeter defender capable of guarding the opposition’s best backcourt players.

The Cavaliers, however, remain firmly in the race.

After another deep playoff run, Cleveland is searching for experienced backcourt depth and views Melton as a player who can complement its talented young core. Financial flexibility could ultimately decide the battle, with the Lakers believed to have more room to structure a competitive offer.

There is another wrinkle.

While the Lakers have been heavily linked with Melton throughout free agency, fresh reports suggest the Golden State Warriors have re-entered the race and are now making a serious push to retain the guard after he impressed during his brief stint with the franchise before injury. The Warriors recently re-signed Melton to a two-year deal, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, ending speculation about a move to Los Angeles.

If that deal is finalised, it would close the door on one of the biggest remaining free-agent storylines.

Before Golden State’s agreement, Melton was widely regarded as one of the best unsigned players available. His combination of defensive versatility, outside shooting and playoff experience made him a logical target for virtually every contender.

For the Lakers, missing out would be disappointing but far from disastrous.

The franchise has already reshaped its roster around Dončić and remains well placed heading into the new season. However, Melton was viewed as one of the final pieces that could have elevated Los Angeles into genuine championship contention.

As free agency continues to unfold, expect more twists.

But if there’s one lesson from this offseason, it’s that nothing should be considered done until the contract is signed.

CHANCES ARE YOU’RE ABOUT TO LOSE.
