Dylan Walker has become the latest experienced NRL player to head overseas, but Parramatta fans could be forgiven for wondering whether the club has let one of its most valuable utilities walk out the door too soon.
The Eels have confirmed Walker will join English Super League powerhouse Leeds Rhinos on a three-year deal from 2027 after the veteran was not offered a new contract by Parramatta. The move ends a brief but impressive stint at the club following his arrival from the Warriors in 2025.
Walker’s departure comes at an interesting time.
Only 24 hours earlier, the 31-year-old produced one of the plays of the NRL season in Parramatta’s upset 23-14 victory over Manly, throwing an audacious no-look flick pass to send Kelma Tuilagi over for a crucial try. The moment drew widespread praise from commentators, with many labelling it one of the best assists of the season.
It’s exactly the type of football Walker has built his career on.

Across more than 260 first-grade appearances with South Sydney, Manly, the Warriors and Parramatta, Walker has earned a reputation as one of the game’s ultimate utility players. Whether playing lock, five-eighth, centre or off the interchange bench, he has consistently delivered energy, experience and attacking spark.
That versatility is precisely why Leeds Rhinos were so eager to secure his signature.
Rhinos coach Brad Arthur, who worked with Walker at Parramatta, described the premiership winner as a player who brings professionalism, leadership and the ability to cover multiple positions at the highest level. Walker will join the English club on a three-year contract at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season.
Walker admitted he was disappointed not to receive another contract from Parramatta but acknowledged the modern game is increasingly driven by youth.
Rather than dwelling on the decision, he said he is determined to finish his time at the Eels strongly before embracing a new challenge in the Super League.
His departure also reflects a growing trend across the NRL.
Experienced players such as Luciano Leilua, Damien Cook and Jesse Arthars have all secured overseas opportunities in recent months as Super League clubs continue targeting proven NRL performers who still have plenty left to offer.
For Parramatta, the move is understandable.
Coach Jason Ryles has invested heavily in reshaping the roster, with younger forwards and outside backs beginning to establish themselves as the club looks towards sustained success rather than short-term fixes.
But there is always a risk when experience walks out the door.
Players like Walker don’t simply contribute through statistics. They steady young teams, provide leadership during difficult moments and offer the flexibility every successful squad needs across a long season.
Whether the Eels have judged that balance correctly won’t be known until next year.
For Leeds, however, there is little doubt.
They believe they’ve signed a player who can make an immediate impact.
