Belmont Tip Sheet, Staking Plan and Horses To Follow – Wednesday 9th September

Only a couple of races that interest me on a fairly mediocre midweek Belmont card. The rail goes out 15m, with the last time the rail went out this far, the middle of the track was a travellator in the straight. Track is currently a soft 5 but likely a good 4 by race time. Strong north westerlys mean cover is essential for the sprint races, with a headwind in the straight.

Race 1 – 1:49PM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MAIDEN (1200m)

7. Indigo Blue – 6. Aztec Gold – 3. Excerpt – 1. Dark Assault

Indigo Blue:

Got some keen eyes on her this debutant off the back of a couple of very impressive trials. Firstly ran 2nd over 1100m behind Chili Is Hot, who has since won 2 on the bounce to start her career, defeating the very handy Kerman Rock who ran a very nice race behind Phanta and Dom To Shoot at Saturday 3yo grade. Then came out and won a trial over the 950m when jumping straight to the front and doing it very comfortably there without really being asked for too much. Scratched out of a Saturday race on the weekenbd just gone for this so all things point towards them being very confident to get her career off to a winning start here. Gets a beautiful draw in 1 for Pateman to either take it up or just take a sit in behind them and looks a smart type from the work she’s put on the board thus far, on-topper.

Aztec Gold:

The other that interests me is Aztec Gold on debut for the Bernie Miller yard in the Cup Night colours. Has been really catching the eye at the trials with the way she has been finishing off, jumping out of the ground late at her most recent jump-out behind Theresyourtrouble in one of the fastest trials of the morning (faster than Indigo Blue’s on the day). Green, but looks to have plenty of talent and a turn of foot under the hood. Carbery will take her back but really like the 1200m for her 1st up as it gives her plenty of time to get into her work and if he can get her some cover from an awkward draw (and they can run-on), $8.00+ is more than an acceptable price to find out.

4. Bolshoi Gal – 7. The Finest – 2. Nurhaci – 9. Warzachantz

Race 4 – 3:35PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1200m)

3. Gillespie – 2. Annihilator – 9. Wakan Tanka – 5. Our Insider

Race 5 – 4:15PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET HANDICAP (1200m)

1. Peko – 2. Native Chimes – 7. Jag The Joker – 9. Perceive

Race 6 – 4:55PM PENINSULA DINING ROOM HANDICAP (2100m)

11. Ahyoka Frost – 5. American Soul – 3. Rio Rogue – 9. Royal Choisir

Race 7 – 5:30PM MORLEY GROWERS MARKET HANDICAP (1400m)

12. Peppijack – 4. Astronomite – 9. Abby Lane – 5. Count Tomoz Off

Peppijack:

Keen Peppijack runs a race here and brings in some really solid form, with a last start 3rd behind Ration Aly and Super Teroitoa in a much stronger 60+ handicap than this. Breezed outside a very race fit, in-form Super Teroitoa that day and looks to do the same here outside favourite Come Right Back, who is 1st up off a long spell. Stuck on really well in the straight to only finish 1L adrift of those two runners. Gets Yuill on-board here which is a big tick, stays at the same weight in what is to me a far weaker race and is over the odds at $9 given the suitable map he gets in transit. Will be in the finish.

Astronomite:

Going well Astronomite and gets a much better race set-up here than last start. Finishing 2nd behind Tonkatuff isn’t exactly form to write home about, but when you look at how the race panned out, it was a big run all things considered. Pulled really hard mid-race and never settled, with Pateman forced to drop the reigns and let him roll up, where he raced 3 wide without cover from about 850m out, was still able to go past the on-pace brigade but was nabbed late by Tonkatuff who was out very wide in what was the A1 place to be that day (out-wide was a travellator in the straight). Maps much better here from gate 2, where he should hop on the back of Come Right Back and be much closer in running. On the 7 day-back up, Pateman sticks, in an open race with what I believe to be a false favourite, like his chances.
