According to Luke Easterling of Sports Illustrated on Saturday, the Chicago Bears have traded quarterback Justin Fields of Kennesaw, Georgia to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In return, the Bears are receiving a conditional draft pick. The draft pick is a sixth round pick in the 2025 National Football League Draft. However, the pick is a fourth round pick if Fields takes 51% of the snaps in 2024. The quarterback situation in Pittsburgh is mighty interesting because the Steelers have signed Russell Wilson of Cincinnati, Ohio to a one-year deal worth $1.21 million, and traded disgruntled quarterback Kenny Pickett of Oakhurst, New Jersey to the Philadelphia Eagles with a fourth round pick in 2024 for a third round pick in 2024 and two seventh round picks in 2025.
Fields has spent the last three seasons quarterbacking the Bears. He was initially a star at Ohio State before being drafted 11th overall by Chicago in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In 2023, Fields completed 227 passes in 370 attempts for 2562 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also had 124 rushes for 657 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
There is no doubt the 2022 NFL season was a topsy turvy season for Fields. Yes, he led the NFL with 7.1 rushing yards per attempt, and led all quarterbacks with 1143 rushing yards, however, Fields only won three times in 15 games, was sacked a NFL high 55 times, and also led the NFL with 16 fumbles.
The general feeling is that Wilson will be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh this season. Even though Wilson was great with the Seattle Seahawks, one cannot ignore the fact he did not meet expectations in his time with the Denver Broncos.
