Eleven NFL trades on opening week of NFL Free Agency

In the opening month of NFL free agency, there were a dozen trades involving players. We already went into detail of the trade between the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns (Browns receiving wide receiver Jerry Jeudy). Now it is time to look at the other 11.

Keenan Allen to Chicago

The Bears acquired wide receiver Keenan Allen of Greensboro, North Carolina from the Los Angeles Chargers for a fourth round pick in 2024 on Thursday. This past season, Allen had 108 catches for 1243 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. In the last seven seasons with the Chargers, Allen was selected to the Pro Bowl six times, including 2023.

Ryan Bates to Chicago

In addition to Allen, the Bears received an offensive lineman via a trade. They acquired offensive guard Ryan Bates from the Buffalo Bills for a fifth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on March 5. In 73 games over the last five seasons with the Bills, Bates had one fumble recovery. Bates, who is 6’4″, 300 pounds, played the last five seasons with the Bills.

Brian Burns to the New York Giants

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers traded defensive end Brian Burns of Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the New York Giants for a second and fifth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. A Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022, Burns had 50 combined tackles (32 solo tackles and 18 assisted tackles), 16 tackles for a loss, two pass deflections, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and eight sacks in 2023. The fumble recovery came in a 9-7 Panthers win over the Atlanta Falcons on December 17. Burns played the last five seasons with the Panthers.

Maliek Collins to San Francisco

On Wednesday, the Houston Texans traded defensive tackle Maliek Collins of Kansas City, Kansas to the San Francisco 49ers for a seventh round draft pick in 2024. The 49ers will be the fourth NFL team Collins has played with as he has also played with the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders. In 2023, Collins had 41 combined tackles (19 solo tackles and 22 assisted tackles), eight tackles for a loss, five sacks and one pass deflection. The pass deflection came in a 23-19 Texans win over the Indianapolis Colts on January 6.

Carlton Davis to Detroit

On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded cornerback Carlton Davis of Miami, Florida to the Detroit Lions with a sixth round pick in the 2024 and 2025 NFL Draft for a third round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Davis has spent the last six seasons with the Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl in 2021. In 2023, he had 52 combined tackles (40n solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles), two interceptions for three yards and nine pass deflections.

Sam Howell to Seattle

On Thursday, the Seattle Seahawks acquired quarterback Sam Howell of Waynesville, North Carolina from the Washington Commanders with a fourth and sixth round pick in 2024 for a third and fifth round pick in 2024. This past season in Washington, Howell completed 388 passes in 612 attempts for 3946 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. He also had 48 rushes for 263 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Dontae Jackson for Diontae Johnson

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers traded cornerback Donte Jackson of New Orleans, Louisiana and a sixth round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for wide receiver Diontae Johnson of Ruskin, Florida and a seventh round pick in 2024. Jackson played six seasons with the Panthers. He has 59 combined tackles (49 solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles), five tackles for a loss), and one forced fumble. The forced fumble came in a 15-13 Panthers win over the Houston Texans on October 29. Johnson, who has played the last five seasons with the Steelers, had 51 catches for 717 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2023. As a Pro Bowler in 2021, Johnson had 107 catches for 1161 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Mac Jones to Jacksonville

It seems Mac Jones of Jacksonville, Florida will be a backup to Trevor Lawrence in 2024 for his hometown team, the Jaguars. On Wednesday, the New England Patriots traded Jones to the Jaguars for a sixth round draft pick in 2024. During 2023, Jones completed 224 passes in 345 attempts for 2120 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He also had 26 rushes for 96 rushing yards.

Rondale Moore for Desmond Ridder

In the only transaction among the 11 not involving a NFL Draft Pick, the Arizona Cardinals traded wide receiver Rondale Moore of New Albany, Indiana, to the Atlanta Falcons for quarterback Desmond Ridder of Louisville, Kentucky. In 2023, Moore had 40 catches for 352 yards and one touchdown. In 2023, Ridder completed 249 passes in 388 attempts for 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, along with 53 rushes for 193 rushing yards and five touchdown rushes.

Morgan Moses to New York Jets

On Wednesday, the Baltimore Ravens traded tackle Morgan Moses of Richmond, Virginia to the New York Jets with a fourth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for a fourth and a sixth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Moses has played the last decade in the NFL (seven seasons in Washington, one season with the New York Jets in 2021 and the last two seasons with the Ravens. While with Washington, Moses had one forced fumble, one solo tackle and three fumble recoveries.

Kenny Pickett to the Eagles

On Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles acquired quarterback Kenny Pickett of Oakhurst, New Jersey from the Pittsburgh Steelers with a fourth round pick in 2024 for a third round pick in 2024 and two seventh round picks in 2025. Pickett completed 201 passes in 324 attempts, along with six touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had 42 rushes for 54 yards and one rushing touchdown. The rushing touchdown came in a 24-17 Steelers win over the Los Angeles Rams on October 22.
