Ashleigh Buhai wins 2022 British Women’s Open
August 9, 2022

Ashleigh Buhai of Johannesburg, South Africa is the 2022 British Women’s Open champion. Despite a poor fourth round of golf, Buhai was strong enough over her first three rounds to force a playoff where she beat In-gee Chun of South Korea.
Buhai and Chun were both at -10 after four rounds. In the playoff, Buhai and Chun both recorded pars on the first and third playoff holes, and both bogeyed the second playoff hole. Then on the fourth playoff hole, right before sunset at the Muirfield Golf Course in Scotland, Buhai won the tournament with a score of par, while Chun had a bogey.
Four other golfers were in contention. Hinako Shibuno of Japan, the 2019 British Women’s Open champion, was at -9, Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden, Minjee Lee of Perth, Australia and Leona Maguire of Ireland were at -7. Of the players in contention, Chun and Lee were multiple major champions. Chun won the 2015 United States Women’s Open, the 2016 Evian Championship and the 2022 Women’s PGA Championship. Lee won the 2021 Evian Championship and the 2022 United States Women’s Open.

Buhai was the most dominant golfer in the field in round two and three. After 54 holes, the 33-year-old LPGA veteran was at -14. But one bad hole in Bahai’s fourth round contributed to the playoff. It came on the par-four 15th, when she shot a score of seven. The triple bogey came after bogeys on the second and ninth holes. Buhai’s lone birdie on Sunday came on the par-five fifth hole.
This was Buhai’s first career LPGA Tour victory. She previously won three times on the Ladies European Tour.
