The Queen’s Club Championship is taking place in London this week. It is considered one of the top all-grass court tennis tournaments in the world as the players prepare for Wimbledon, which starts at the end of June.
All the headlines this week are centered around world number 36 Corentin Moutet of France, who was fined 30,325 pounds for swearing during his post match interview according to Jonathan Jurejko of BBC Sports on Friday. He specifically said the f-bomb seven times.
To put Moutet’s outburst into perspective, he earned 32,800 pounds for winning his match. However, he will only win 2,475 pounds for winning when you take away the fine for inappropriate language into account.
Why did Moutet say the f-bomb initially? Well, it was because he was expressing his frustration of returning a second serve that went 142 miles per hour. Moutet’s initial response was interesting minus the profanity. However, you need to seriously wonder what Moutet was thinking because there was no need to swear like that.
This was supposed to be a joyous occasion for Moutet. He had just defeated fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a first round win by a score of 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. This was their first ever meeting head-to-head. The fact that Moutet has never played Mpetshi Perricard before may be a little bit of a surprise when you take into account that both players have been ranked in the top 30 in the past. Mpetshi Perricard, the 2024 Swiss Indoors champion, has been ranked as high as number 29, and Moutet has been as high as number 30.
Moutet was not at Queen’s long. He lost his second round match to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, 6-4, 6-3.
