The first round of the 2026 United States Open is almost complete and Wyndham Clark of Denver, Colorado is the leader. What we saw on Thursday was an impressive display of dominance from a golfer looking for his second United States Open title after previously winning in 2023 from the Los Angeles Country Club.
Clark did not complete his round, but is the day one leader at -6. The world number 34 has two holes left to complete his first round on Friday. The two holes that Clark still needs to participate on are the eighth and ninth holes, as he began on the back nine.
During the 16 holes, Clark had one eagle, five birdies and one bogey. He eagled the fifth hole, birdied the third, fourth, 10th, 11th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the second hole.
On the par five fifth hole, Clark had a tee shot of 394 yards. Next came the approach shot, where Clark was spectacular. His shot went 197 yards. That set up an eagle putt from three feet and two inches, which Clark made.
Clark’s lead at this time is four strokes over his nearest competitors. There is a seven way tie for second place at -2. There you can find Americans Sam Stevens, Ryder Cowan, Max McGreevy, Dustin Johnson, and Gary Woodland, along with Spain’s Jon Rahm and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick. It should be noted that Cowan is only an amateur as he attends the University of Oklahoma where he is a senior.
