Weekend Wrap: Our Favourite Sporting Moments From The Weekend
November 12, 2018
In this segment, we bring you a look at the biggest sporting moments of the past weekend.
This one certainly wasn’t bereft of amazing moments; from nail-biters to the downright unbelievable, not to mention rivalries galore.
Der Klassiker
The Bundesliga’s biggest clubs, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund hold the biggest rivalry in German football.
In recent history, they have produced some absolute cracker matches, and this weekend’s matchup was no different; delivering an edge of your seat, end to end game.
With Borussia Dortmund first on the ladder, and Bayern trailing in third, an unfamiliar position for them, the pressure was on for the Bavarians and their new coach, Niko Kovac, to get the win on enemy soil.
Despite some defensive lapses, Bayern looked the goods in the first half, heading to the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a 26th minute Lewandowski header.
Ultimately though, their defensive frailties undid them, and Borussia Dortmund made a thrilling comeback, thanks to Paco Alcacer and a Marco Reus brace, to hold a 3-2 lead late in the second half.
As the seconds ticked by in injury time, yet another Lewandowski header found the back of the net, only for the linesman’s flag to be up for offside, allowing a relieved Dortmund to take all three points.
Questions remain over the fate of Kovac and Bayern’s season ahead, but Dortmund showed that they are the real deal while extending their lead on top of the table.
All Blacks vs England
Rugby saw its own thriller this weekend, with New Zealand escaping defeat with a one-point victory over England.
At one point, the All Blacks were down by 15 but ended up clawing out a 16-15 win.
The match wasn’t without controversy, with a late England try being denied.
When England crossed over in the 76th minute, it looked like they may have edged out a famous win.
Instead, the match will be remembered for the new TMO rules, which resulted in on-field ref Jerome Garces and Television Match Official Marius Jonker concluding England forward Courtney Lawes was offside when he put pressure on TJ Perenara.
Despite the contentious decision, the All Blacks again showed why they are the best team in all of the international sports.
England started fast, yet New Zealand were able to score 16 unanswered points and steal the victory.
UFC Fight Night 139
The story surrounding Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry, was huge draw for this card, but the headliner stole the show with one of the craziest ends to a fight you will ever see.
In the second to last fight, Cowboy got revenge on the team that chose the up-and-comer over him and loyalty, with a first round arm-bar.
Celebrating in the ring with his son, whose middle name is actually Danger, it was hard to see the night rising above this peak.
Step up the ‘Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung and Mexico’s Yair Rodriguez.
Both black belts in Taekwondo, it was expected that this striking match would be pleasing for the crowd.
Add in the Korean Zombie’s Principal Skinner ‘non-giving-up guy’ impression, and Rodriguez’s acrobatic flair, it was soon apparent that this was a whole mountain above what the rest of the card had dished up.
The fight was fairly even for the most part, with each fighter respectful of their opponent’s skillset.
In the fourth and fifth rounds, the elevation of Denver was getting to both men, with pauses for breathing and high-fives becoming a regular and strange site.
With 15 seconds left on the clock, both fighters started bizarrely celebrating, before the ten-second call signaled to Sung Jung to unleash a flurry of punches.
In this exchange, Rodriguez countered with, and landed, an unbelievable elbow, flooring Sung Jung with a second left in the fight, sending the commentators and fans into meltdown.
Manchester Derby
A Manchester Derby is going to be a highlight of any given weekend and we were fortunate enough to view the next page in this historic rivalry’s book this week at Etihad Stadium.
A Bernardo Silva assist resulted in a David Silva goal in the 11th minute.
Commentator Peter Drury worded it best with “Silva turns to City gold” as the home team took an early lead over the Reds.
The second half began in similar fashion, with an Aguero stunner two minutes after the break.
United were awarded a penalty with City keeper Ederson bringing down Lukaku in the box.
Anthony Martial struck home the penalty to keep his side in the derby just before the hour mark.
But the game’s outcome was settled when Gundogan sealed it with a third goal for City in the 85th minute.
City lead the table ahead of Liverpool, while United are 12 points from their Manchester rivals, back in eighth.
