Warriors deliver with statement win over the Suns
December 7, 2021
Heading into Friday’s game in San Francisco, the Phoenix Suns were red hot. That is what happens when you record a franchise-high 18 straight wins. However even great things are not meant to last, and on Friday, the Suns’ 18-game winning streak came to an end in a 118-96 loss to the Warriors in a battle between the National Basketball Association’s two top teams. The Warriors and Suns currently have the same record in the NBA at 19 wins and four losses.
The Warriors were led by point guard Stephen Curry of Akron, Ohio, who had a team-high 23 points. Deandre Ayton of Nassau, Bahamas, led the Suns with 23 points. It was a much better overall game for Curry than Ayton, as Curry was a +10, while Ayton was a -16.
Five Warriors players reached double digits in scoring. Andrew Wiggins of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Gary Payton II of Seattle, Washington had 19 points each. Juan Toscano-Anderson of Oakland, California had 17 points coming off the bench, while Jordan Poole had 14 points.
It was clear that the Suns were missing star shooting guard Devin Booker, who is out with a hamstring injury. Booker has averaged 23.2 points per game in 2021-22.
Interestingly though the Warriors were unable to keep the momentum they got from Friday’s win on Saturday. In an upset, the Warriors were beaten 112-107 to the San Antonio Spurs thanks to 25 points from Derrick White, and a double-double from Dejounte Murray (23 points and 12 rebounds). With the Spurs win, Gregg Popovich now has 1318 regular season victories as a head coach. He is third all-time. Don Nelson leads with 1335 wins and Lenny Wilkens is second with 1332 wins.
