Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ontario has withdrawn from the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto, Ontario because of a knee injury according to the Canadian Press on Tuesday. Mboko did not participate at Wimbledon either because of a medial collateral ligament injury she suffered at the HSBC Championships in Queen’s last month.
Mboko injured her knee in the second set in a second round match against Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. At the time of the match, Pliskova won the first set 6-2, and then Mboko was leading the second set 4-3. Pliskova is a two-time grand slam finalist as she lost on the final Saturday of a major twice (2016 United States Open and 2021 Wimbledon).
The injury to Mboko is noteworthy, as she won the 2025 National Bank Open in Montreal. In the final, she defeated Naomi Osaka of Japan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Mboko is currently ranked 10th in the world. She has 3670 WTA points. Due to the fact Mboko will be skipping the National Bank Open and unable to defend the points she generated from last summer, she will experience a significant drop in the WTA rankings. It is questionable if she will be at the 2026 United States Open.
In other Canadian women’s tennis news, Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Ontario, is in the women’s doubles semifinals of Wimbledon. She has teamed up with Brazil’s Luisa Stefani, and are the second seeds. Their next opponents will be the 13th seeds, Shuko Aoyama of Japan, and En-shuo Liang of Taiwan.
