The United States have jumped out to a 4-1 lead in foursome action over the International Team at the 2022 Presidents Cup in Charlotte, North Carolina. The United States have completely dominated the tournament over the years and have won 11 of 13 times, including all seven events on American soil.
The American pair that was the most dominant on the first day of this prestigious international golf team tournament was Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California and reigning Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California. Cantlay and Schauffele came through with an overwhelming 6&5 win over 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan.Â
Three other American teams came through with much more marginal wins. Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas and Justin Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky, the American duo with multiple major titles, won by a score of 2&1. Spieth, who won the 2015 Masters, 2015 United States Open, and 2017 British Open, teamed up with Thomas, the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championship winner, to beat Canadian Corey Conners and South Korea’s Sung-jae Im. Meanwhile, Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California, the 2020 PGA Championship winner and 2021 British Open champion, and Cameron Young of Scarborough, New York, beat Joo-hyung Kim and Kyoung-hoon Lee of South Korea 2&1, and Tony Finau of Las Vegas, Nevada teamed up with Max Homa of Burbank, California to beat Canada’s Taylor Pendrith and Chile’s Mito Pereira 1 up.
Meanwhile, an Australian contributed to the International Team’s only point. Cameron Davis of Sydney and South Korea’s Si-woo Kim upset the American duo of Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns 2 up. Friday play is four ball.
