After reaching the finals of the WTA Finals in Mexico, Kontaveit posted a record of 48 wins and 17 losses in 2021.

9) Maria Sakkari–Greece–$2,021,970

The 26-year-old Athens native reached two semifinals at majors this year. She reached the final four of the U.S. Open, and French Open. In Flushing Meadows, Sakkari was beaten 6-1, 6-4 to Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, and at Roland Garros, Sakkari was beaten 7-5, 4-6, 9-7 by Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic. Raducanu went on to win the U.S. Open and Krejcikova went on to win the French Open.

8) Naomi Osaka–Japan–$2,306,222

Despite playing a limited season to work on her mental health, Naomi Osaka had a strong 2021 tennis season and still reached the $2 million mark in earnings. Her biggest highlight was winning the Australian Open where she defeated American Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in the final. Osaka finished the year with a record of 19 wins and six losses.

7) Paula Badosa–Spain–$2,602,330

Like Cameron Norrie on the men’s side, Paula Badosa of Spain won the biggest title of her career this fall when she won at Indian Wells. In the final, Badosa beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the final, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. It was definitely an unexpected breakout year for Badosa. She posted a record of 43 wins and 17 losses. Prior to 2021, Badosa only had 18 WTA wins in six seasons. In addition to winning Indian Wells, Badosa also won the 2021 Belgrade Open.

6) Aryna Sabalenka–Belarus–$2,664,681

For years, when people thought of Belarussian tennis, they instantly thought of Victoria Azarenka.  Now it is time to think of Aryna Sabalenka. The 23-year-old native of Minsk reached the semifinals of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, where she lost to Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada respectively. In addition to her two great grand slam results, Sabalenka won the Abu Dhabi Open in January and the Madrid Open in May. She finished the year at 45 wins and 18 losses.

5) Emma Raducanu–Great Britain–$2,807,446

The 2021 U.S. Open was an amazing tournament for Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who won the title despite being ranked 150th in the world and having to go through qualifying just to participate in the main draw. 4) Garbine Muguruza–Spain–$2,827,274

The highlight of the 2021 tennis season for Garbine Muguruza of Spain came at the end of the year when she won the 2021 WTA Finals by beating Kontaveit in the final, 6-3, 7-5. The 29-year-old from Louny, who has been on the WTA Tour since 2009, had a very solid 2021 tennis season despite not winning a single tournament. Pliskova reached the 2021 Wimbledon final, the Italian Open final, and the National Bank Open final. It was the fact that she reached three finals on three different surfaces   that deserves high praise for her outstanding versatility. Pliskova finished the year at 37 wins and 19 losses. Unfortunately, a hand injury while training will force her to miss the 2022 Australian Open.

2) Barbora Krejcvikova–Czech Republic–$2,969,248

Even though Pliskova made the third most money in 2021 earnings among women’s singles tennis players, she was not the highest paid player from the Czech Republic. That accomplishment belonged to Barbora Krejcikova of Brno, who won the 2021 French Open, 2021 Internationaux de Strasbourg and the Prague Open. What made Krejcikova’s French Open run so impressive, its the fact she won the women’s doubles title too. That helped her win a total of $3.6 million in 2021. Krejcikova also had a singles record of 40 wins and 10 losses in 2021.
