Titans name Brian Callahan new head coach

According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans have named Brian Callahan of Champaign, Illinois as the new head coach. Callahan takes over from Mike Vrabel of Akron, Ohio, who was fired on January 9.

Callahan was considered a hot commodity when it came to the head coaching positions. That is because the Bengals had offensive success with Jake Browning at quarterback this past season when Joe Burrow had a season-ending wrist injury in November.

This is Callahan’s first time as a National Football League head coach. He had been the offensive coordinator the last five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Prior to his time in Cincinnati, Callahan worked with the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, and Oakland Raiders. He was with the Broncos as a coaching assistant in 2010, an offensive quality control coach in 2011 and 2012, and offensive assistant from 2013 to 2015. Callahan was with the Lions in 2016 and 2017 as their quarterback coach and with the Raiders in 2018 as their quarterback coach.

In Callahan’s final season with the Broncos, Denver won the Super Bowl. They defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10. However, it should be noted that the Broncos won the game more for their exceptional defense than offense, as Von Miller did a sensational job in containing Cam Newton.

As a player, Callahan played college football at UCLA from 2002 to 2005. He was with the Bruins for four seasons at quarterback. His first coaching job was also with UCLA. In 2006 and 2007, Callahan was a graduate assistant while completing his degree in sociology and Masters in education.
