Timberwolves trade Karl-Anthony Towns to Knicks
September 29, 2024
There was a rather surprising blockbuster trade between the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. The New York Knicks acquired power forward Karl-Anthony Towns of Edison, New Jersey from the Minnesota Timberwolves for power forward Julius Randle of Dallas, Texas, shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo of Newark, Delaware, and a first round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Towns has played the last nine seasons with the Timberwolves, and was a four-time All-Star (2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024). He was the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and the NBA rookie of the year in 2016. This past season, Towns averaged 21.8 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game, and three assists per game. He had a field goal percentage of .504, three point percentage of .416, and a free throw percentage of .873. This past season, Towns set the Timberwolves franchise record for most points in a game with 62 in a 128-125 Minnesota loss to the Charlotte Hornets on January 22, 2024.Â
Randle is joining his fourth NBA team. He previously played four seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2014 to 2018, one season with the New Orleans Pelicans from 2018 to 2019, and five seasons with the New York Knicks from 2019 to 2024. Randle was a three-time All-Star with the Knicks in 2021, 2023, and 2024, and was the NBA’s most improved player in 2020-21. This past season with the Knicks, Randle averaged 24 points per game, 9.2 assists per game, and five rebounds per game. He had a field goal percentage of .472, three-point percentage of .311, and free throw percentage of .781.
DiVincenzo is joining his fifth NBA franchise. He was with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2018 to 2022, the Sacramento Kings in 2022, the Golden State Warriors from 2022 to 2023, and the New York Knicks from 2023 to 2024. This past season, DiVincenzo averaged 15.5 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, 2.7 assists per game, and 1.3 steals per game. He had a field goal percentage of .443, free throw percentage of .754, and three point percentage of .401. DiVincenzo was also on the Bucks team that won the 2021 NBA Finals.
