Texans sign running back Cam Akers
July 23, 2024

According to DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN on Sunday, the Houston Texans have signed running back Cam Akers of Clinton, Mississippi to a contract. The financial terms and length of contract have not yet been disclosed.
Akers is currently third on the Texans depth chart at the running back position. He is behind Joe Mixon of Oakley, California and Dameon Pierce of Bainbridge, Georgia. Mixon was acquired by the Texans in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals on March 12 for a seventh round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Bengals selected safety Daijahn Anthony of Richmond, Virginia with the 224th overall pick.
This will be third NFL franchise for Akers. He previously played four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and six games last season with the Minnesota Vikings after being traded to Minnesota on September 20 with a conditional seventh round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft for a conditional sixth round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. While with the Rams, he won Super Bowl LVI.
Akers has had his fair share of injuries over his career. He tore his Achilles in July of 2021, while training for the 2021 NFL season. As a result, he only played one game in 2021. Then this past season for the Vikings, Akers tore his Achilles again in a 31-28 Vikings win over the Atlanta Falcons on November 5, and was gone for the rest of the season.
This past season, Akers had 60 rushes for 167 rushing yards and two touchdowns in seven games. He also had 11 catches for another 70 receiving yards. Akers’s first touchdown came on September 10, in a 30-13 Rams win over the Seattle Seahawks on September 10. He had a one-yard run with nine minutes and 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and put the Rams up 24-13. Akers then had a six-yard run on October 29, which opened the scoring, in a 24-10 Packers win over the Green Bay Packers.
