The 2022 United States Open begins on Monday. Here are the top five matches from Flushing Meadows.
5) (23) Nick Kyrgios–Australia vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis–Australia–
The top two Australians on the ATP Tour meet each other in round one. Kyrgios of Canberra is 23rd in the world and Kokkinakis is 70th. This will be their first meeting head-to-head all-time.
4) (12) Pablo Carreno Busta–Spain vs. Dominic Thiem–Austria–
This first round men’s match has great intrigue. Carreno Busta enters the 2022 U.S. Open having won the National Bank Open in Montreal earlier this month, while Thiem is a major champion from the past, having won the 2020 U.S. Open. Thiem is 7-0 against Carreno Busta, including a four set win of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round of the 2016 U.S. Open.
3) (13) Belinda Bencic–Switzerland vs. Andrea Petkovic–Germany
This first round matchup on the women’s side has two grand slam semifinalists. Bencic reached the 2019 United States Open semifinal, and Petkovic reached the 2014 French Open semifinal. Bencic has won four of five meetings in the past head-to-head including the second round of the 2016 US Open, where she won 6-3, 6-2.
2) (3) Maria Sakkari–Greece vs. Tatjana Maria–Germany
Sakkari is a two-time grand slam semifinalist as she reached the semifinals of the 2021 French Open and 2021 Wimbledon. Maria meanwhile was in the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2022. Maria has won two of three meetings all-time, including the third round of Wimbledon, 6-3, 7-5.
1) (19) Danielle Collins–United States vs. Naomi Osaka–Japan
Here we have four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan against the 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins of the United States. Osaka won the 2018 and 2020 United States Open, and 2019 and 2021 Australian Open. Osaka won the only previous meeting, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round of the 2018 China Open in Beijing.
