Novak Djokovic wins 20th grand slam title

It was a record-tying day at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Sunday as Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his 20th grand slam title. Djokovic won his sixth Wimbledon championship as he defeated Matteo Berrettini of Italy, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Throughout the match, Djokovic was able to return Berrettini’s serve much better than Berrettini was able to return Djokovic’s. Djokovic had 15 break point opportunities where he was able to break Berretini six times. Berrettini meanwhile had seven break point opportunities on Djokovic’s serve, of which he was able to break Djokovic twice.

There is no doubt that Berrettini challenged Djokovic, like Shapovalov challenged Djokovic in the men’s semifinals on Friday. However, we are in an era where Djokovic has clearly separated himself from the rest of the pack on the ATP Tour, and he is now only one major title away from becoming the first player in men’s tennis to win all four grand slams in the same year since Rod Laver accomplished the feat in 1969.

Steffi Graf of Germany was the last tennis player to win all four majors in one year (1988). That year she also won the gold medal in women’s tennis at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Djokovic is trying to match Graff’s accomplishment, and win an Olympic gold medal in Asia too, as the Olympic Games this year are in Tokyo.

Djokovic is now tied with Rafael Nadal of Spain, and Roger Federer of Switzerland, for the most grand slam titles ever. Djokovic has now won nine Australian Opens, six Wimbledons, two French Open titles, and three United States Open championships. Federer has won eight Wimbledons, six Australian Opens, five United States Opens, and one French Open. Nadal, the king of clay, has won a remarkable 13 French Opens, four United States Opens, two Wimbledon titles, and one Australian Open.
