Steve Nash no longer coaching the Nets should not be a surprise

Steve Nash will no longer be coaching the Brooklyn Nets according to TMZ Sports. On Tuesday, the Nets and Nash “mutually parted ways.”

You could spin this multiple ways. The Nets are not saying that Nash was fired. Nash is not saying he resigned. Either way, one of the greatest point guards to ever play the game of professional basketball will no longer be coaching the Nets.

When Nash was brought on to coach the Nets, it was simply “Championship or Bust“, according to James Smith of The Sporting Base. From a managerial perspective, the Nets were built to win the NBA Finals, and had three superstars that were intended to take them there. But James Harden was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, Australia native Kyrie Irving made the controversial stance to decide to be unvaccinated, and Kevin Durant made the offseason demand to be traded if Nash was not fired.

Anyway you look at it, the Nets underachieved with Nash as their coach and were a “bust”. Brooklyn was expected to go deep. Year number one was ok as the Nets reached the Eastern Conference semifinals before losing to the Milwaukee Bucks. Year number two the Nets were swept by the Boston Celtics in four games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, and year three, the Nets started out only winning two of their first seven games.

Now the Nets will be looking to hire a new head coach to replace Nash. Expect it to be a coach with prior head coaching experience in the NBA. That is what Nash lacked when he was initially hired by Brooklyn. The new head coach for the Nets will probably be dealing with his fair share of turmoil, and will need to find a different approach than Nash to get positive results.
