The Baltimore Ravens have released kicker Justin Tucker according to Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports on Monday. The release has been termed a “football decision” by the Ravens. However, to those who have followed the Tucker situation recently, one has every reason to be skeptical of the explanation.
From a football perspective, the move does not make a significant amount of sense. Yes, Tucker did not have a great season in 2024. He only made 22 of 30 field goals. When you take a look at Tucker’s career, he has been absolutely flawless. He has made 417 of 468 field goals for a field goal percentage of 89.1%. Tucker also has the record for the longest field goal ever made of 66 yards. He accomplished the feat by kicking a game-winning field goal in a 19-17 Ravens win over the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021.
Rumors increased about Tucker’s future in Baltimore when the Ravens selected Tyler Loop of Lucas, Texas, in the sixth round, 186th overall out of the University of Arizona. Loop was the second kicker taken in the 2025 NFL Draft. He was taken only behind Andres Borregales of Caracas, Venezuela, who was selected in the sixth round, 182nd overall by the New England Patriots out of the University of Miami.
Why is there some controversy surrounding Tucker at this time and why should one question the Ravens reason for his release? Well, it is because he his currently being investigated by the National Football League for inappropriate conduct at massage therapy sessions according to Phil Helsel of NBC News. A total of 16 massage therapists have voiced concerns. What do you think? Is the release a “football decision” or is there something more. Until the investigation has been completed by the NFL, fans have every right to consider the latter.
